I thoroughly enjoyed reading across the centuries this past year, so for 2025, I created a new reading challenge for myself. Introducing, the Anno Domini Reading Challenge!
My goal is to read a book from each century of the Anno Domini era! I’m going to do my best to read a primary work (something actually written in that time period), but there are a few scenarios where I’m opting to read a shortened or high-quality children’s adaptation instead of the original.
Last year I aimed too high and set some unattainable goals for the life stage that I ended up finding myself in. So this year, with one book per century, that brings my reading goal to 21 books. Not only that, but I’m choosing biographies, plays, or novels that are relatively short (i.e. this is not my year to tackle The Brothers Karamazov or The Faerie Queene). I also have a list of other fun reads on my TBR list, so maybe I’ll shoot for 25 books for 2025.
I think the most challenging part of planning for this giveaway, is finding options for the 3rd and 15th centuries. One possibility is to find books written about those centuries or taking place in those centuries, if you can’t find any books that pique your interest.
May the challenge begin! You can read in chronological order, or read according to your mood. You can swap books if you no longer like them later in the year, or scrap the challenge completely.
The desire behind this challenge is to read widely and intentionally, and outside of our cultural echo chamber, while enjoying literature written by great minds across the centuries.
