Book Review: The Bible and Sex by Scott Petty
Series: Little Black Books
Mathias Media, 2010
57 & 78 pgs
In searching for some books on Christian topics, I found the Little Black Books series from Mathias Media — books that get to the point. These short books written by Scott Petty, a youth pastor in Australia, are exactly that.
I have The Bible as well as Sex and they are both excellent titles on their topic. They address the Christian perspective on these subjects in an engaging and informative way that is geared towards youth aged kids.
While some books on the Bible focus on it’s authenticity, Petty’s book focuses on its inspiration and relevance. His aim is to show that not only is it true, but it is relevant and speaks into the reality of our lives today. It covers special and general revelatio and the authority of Scripture, as well as answers the questions: Does the Bible contradict itself? Hasn’t the Bible changed throughout the years?

Meanwhile, Sex responds with a biblical worldview to questions such as:
- Where to find the best sex?
- How far can you go?
- Is Jesus homophobic?
- Is there a positive view of sex that roses above thinking of sex as just the casual answer to a physical need?

While I wouldn’t mind reading The Bible with my pre-teen, I think the Sex book is geared more towards and best suited for teenagers — though some younger kids may already be ready for these conversations.
Overall, both of these books are great resources and helpful to either equip parents or adults or to pass on to teens to equip them as well. The Little Black Books don’t beat around the bush, and are, indeed, fun reads that get straight to the point.
[The publisher sent me this book for review consideration but all opinions are my own.]
