Field Trip Friday: Homestead Heritage Craft Village

About 1.5 hours south of Fort Worth is the Homestead Craft Village at Homestead Heritage–an agrarian Christian community right outside of Waco. It makes for a perfect day trip in the DFW area and is a budget-friendly option as there is no entrance fee.

The Craft Village has multiple buildings, each focusing on a different trade. There is woodworking, spinning, basket weaving, and pottery, as well as a forge, gardens, and a flour mill. It’s a great place to gain a first-hand experience of things like a restored gristmill, for grinding wheat, and blacksmithing.

While the entrance is free, there are multiple gift shops with hand-made items and several locations with paid activities for kids. Our son enjoyed weaving a coaster on a loom and making a brass spoon at the forge.

We brought a picnic lunch with us and enjoyed the scenery in the shade.

On the way home, we stopped at Slovacek’s in the town of West for sausages and kolaches.
