Book Review:
Inside Out & Back Again by Thanha Lai
HarperCollins, 2013
This is a gem of a book. Inside Out & Back Again is based on the author’s first year living in the United States.
Her family fled from Vietnam on a navy ship at the end of the war, and were sponsored by a family in Alabama.
She captures the emotions and cross-cultural encounters so well— what it’s like to leave loved ones, your culture, lose memories, learn a new language, etc. Stories like these really help you sympathize with refugee families.
If you like Others Words for Home, then you’ll enjoy Thanha Lai’s verse novel.
